Formula

How In-Hand Salary Is Calculated

Getting from CTC to take-home salary is a three-step process here's exactly how each step works.

In-Hand Salary Formula

Step 1

Gross Salary = CTC − Bonus

Step 2

Total Deductions = Professional Tax + Employer PF + Employee PF + Additional Deductions

Take Home Salary = Gross Salary − Total Deductions

Note:The employer's PF contribution is counted as a deduction here because, although it's part of your CTC, it never reaches your bank account — it goes straight into your PF account instead. This calculator doesn't factor in income tax (TDS), since that depends on your tax regime and other income.

Example

In-Hand Salary Calculation Example

See how your CTC works out to a monthly take-home figure, step by step, using the values you've entered.

Worked Example

With an annual CTC of ₹12,00,000.00 and a bonus of ₹99,960.00 carved out, your gross salary works out to ₹11,00,040.00 per year.

From this, professional tax of ₹2,400.00, employer PF of ₹21,600.00, employee PF of ₹21,600.00 are deducted — a total of ₹45,600.00 for the year.

That leaves you with a take-home salary of ₹10,54,440.00 annually, or ₹87,870.00 every month — roughly 87.9% of your total CTC.

A few things worth knowing about CTC:

  • Your actual take-home pay will also be reduced by income tax (TDS), which this calculator doesn't include since it depends on your tax regime and other income.

  • If your bonus is paid annually rather than every month, your monthly in-hand figure may look different from month to month depending on when the bonus is credited.

  • Salary structures vary by company — always cross-check this estimate against your actual offer letter or payslip.

Salary Structure

What Makes Up Your CTC?

A typical Indian salary structure bundles together several components some you receive monthly, some annually, and some you never see directly.

Common Components

Basic Salary

Roughly 40–50% of your CTC, fixed and fully taxable. Several other components like PF and gratuity are calculated as a percentage of this figure.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

Paid to help cover rented housing costs. Partially or fully exempt from tax under Section 10(13A) if you actually pay rent and choose the old tax regime use the HRA Calculator to work out your exact exemption.

Leave Travel Allowance (LTA)

An allowance for travel expenses, claimable (with proof) a limited number of times within a block of years.

Special Allowance

A catch-all component that makes up the balance of your salary structure after other components are accounted for. Fully taxable.

Bonus

A performance-linked or annual payout from your employer. Often included in your quoted CTC even though it's paid out separately.

Employer PF Contribution

Typically 12% of basic salary, paid by your employer into your EPF account. Counted as a cost to the company but never credited to your bank account directly.

Employee PF Contribution

Your own 12% contribution to EPF, deducted from your salary every month. This qualifies for a deduction under Section 80C see the EPF Calculator to project how it grows over time.

Professional Tax

A small state-levied tax on employment, deducted monthly. Capped at ₹2,500 per financial year across all states.
