Growth Chart

PPF Balance Over the 15-Year Term

PPF growth is steady rather than explosive — this chart shows the balance building through 15 years of annual deposits and compounding.

Formula

How PPF Maturity is Calculated

The government sets and revises the PPF rate every quarter, and interest is compounded annually on the balance — this calculator simulates that yearly compounding across your full 15-year tenure.

PPF Maturity Formula

F = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) / i]

Yearly Instalment (P)

₹1,50,000.00

Interest Rate (i)

7.1%

Tenure (n)

15 Years

Interest Credited

Annually

Total Investment

₹22,50,000.00

Maturity Value (F)

₹40,68,209.22

Where: F is the maturity value of your PPF account, P is your fixed instalment, i is the annual interest rate (as a decimal), and n is the tenure in years. Each year, your deposit is added to the opening balance, and interest is credited on the combined amount at year-end — this compounds annually until maturity, matching how PPF interest is actually calculated.

Worked Example

Suppose you invest ₹1,50,000.00 every year in your PPF account for 15 years at an annual interest rate of 7.1%, credited annually.

Over this period, you would invest a total of ₹22,50,000.00, and earn total interest of ₹18,18,209.22, entirely tax-free.

Based on these values, your PPF account will mature to approximately ₹40,68,209.22.

A few things worth knowing about PPF:

  • Interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and last day of the month, but credited to your account only at year-end.

  • A lump-sum yearly deposit made before the 5th of April earns interest for the entire financial year, which usually gives slightly better returns than splitting it into instalments.

  • A longer tenure gives compounding more time to work, significantly increasing your total interest earned toward the end of the term.
