XIRR Calculator
Calculate the annualized return on investments with irregular cash flows — add every investment and redemption with its date to see your true XIRR.
Investments vs Redemptions Over Time
This chart plots each cash flow on its actual date — investments below the axis, redemptions above — so you can see the full timeline at a glance.
How XIRR Is Calculated
XIRR has no direct formula — it's solved iteratively by finding the annual rate that brings the net present value of every cash flow, weighted by its exact date, to zero.
XIRR Formula
0 = Σ CFi / (1 + XIRR)di/365
Where: CFᵢ is each individual cash flow (negative for investments, positive for redemptions), and dᵢis the number of days between that cash flow and the first cash flow. Since there's no way to algebraically isolate XIRR in this equation, it's solved using an iterative numerical method — the same approach Excel and Google Sheets use internally.
This calculator uses the Newton-Raphson method to converge on the rate that satisfies this equation, falling back to a bisection search for unusual cash flow patterns where Newton's method doesn't converge cleanly.
XIRR Calculation Example
See how your annualized return is derived from the cash flows you've entered.
Worked Example
You invested ₹50,000.00 on 30 Aug 2024, ₹30,000.00 on 30 Aug 2025.
Against that, you recorded ₹1,00,000.00 in redemptions or current value on 30 Aug 2026.
Weighting each cash flow by its exact date, this works out to an XIRR of 14.57% — the constant annualized rate that makes the net present value of all these cash flows equal to zero.
A few things worth keeping in mind about XIRR:
Cash flows closer to today carry more weight in the calculation than ones further in the past, since XIRR discounts based on exact elapsed time.
If you haven't redeemed your investment yet, add today's date with your current holding value marked as a redemption to see your return as of today.
XIRR is the standard way mutual fund platforms and portfolio trackers report returns for SIPs with irregular contributions or partial withdrawals.
